Downhill is Greenbrier River Trail (old RR grade) and river. Calvin Price Forest roadless block across river. Upslope and sideslope are huge oaks (chestnut, white, red)~ canopy changes quickly, but is probably succeeding to mix-meso climax.;Steep E aspect colluvial slope just above Greenbrier River. Community is a mesophytic, mostly deciduous forest with a mixture of large basswood, sugar maple, buckeye, and red oak,(black maple is abundant in subcanopy). Nearby are large dying hemlock and other large downfall, which are creating gaps. Stand is probably 2nd growth, but is reaching successional and structural maturity, Many trees are leaning downslope.
Representativeness
Small patch mixed mesophytic forest. Similar to forests sampled at New River Gorge, smapled here for comparison and geographic representation. Plot is centered on a mix of larger trees on lower slope.
