Surrounding wetland is approximately 100 acres in size in "basin" below cleared/grazed mountaintops. Cattle graze vegetation severely but soils are not too compacted to be restored. Half of wetland will be fenced off permanently, the other half will be livestock free on a seasonal basis only. Greenbrier limestone outcrops on slopes above wetland contributing to circumneutral nature of the west end of site. Sandstone underlies east end. Various rare species associated - especially with circumneutral side of wetland. Slight alder thicket in middle of site and Rhamnus alnifolia clonal patches on east end. Wetland primarily dominated by graminoids - large Carex zones and Glyceria zones. Landowner reports that this site was a fir-spruce wet forest at turn of century when logged - none now!;Herbaceous wetland community in middle of pH gradient, between observation points P5 (Glyceria/Sphagnum herbaceous vegetation) and P7 (Vaccinium angustifolium/Glyceria/Sphagnum-Polytrichum herbaceous vegetation). Probably a variant of the community observed at these points. Ground cover dominated by Sphagnum, with Aronia sp. Strongly prevelant. A high percentage of Rubus hispidus distinguishes this from othe zones in the wetland; other distinguishing spp. Include Drosera rotundifolia, Polytrichum hummocks above wet floor which provide drier microhabitat for Vaccinium angustifolium c.f. Small alder clumps have also established on scattered Polytrichum hummocks but do not dominate this herbaceous community.
Near the "acidic" sandstone end of site.
Representativeness
There are large acidic bog types elsewhere - but this in context with whole site bumps the ranking up.
