The islands are in an area where the river braids through at least 7 islands. The communities range from sparse weedy annual communities along the water line, to open prairie, battered cobblebar woodland, low terrace forest, and Verbesina alternifolia tall herb communities. On the largest island in a patch of Platanus occidentalis - Liriodendron tulipifera / Asclepias flava / Microstegium we found Juglans cinerea ca/ 1/4 mile south of here;Climax forest growing on old terrace. The plot is just about as wide as the terrace. It's probably a deposit zone acting like a big levee. The area seldom floods. Maybe during catastrophic (100yr.) floods. I bet this got nailed in 1985 and probably not since. The plot is located at least 12ft. above the normal river flow. The river is super dry right now. We easily walked to each island without getting our feet wet. No stumps found on any of the forested areas of the islands. The quad map has this mapped as forest and the map hasn't been updated since.
