Mountaintop on Pottsville sandstone at middle elevation. Area is mesic with coal strip mine and the Rich Mountain Battlefield is nearby. On more mesic aspects there is lots of cherry. Tracts are variously logged and privately owned (owner unknown).;South aspect of side ridge of Rich Mountain. Pottsville geology supporting an oak/heath community with red oak dominant over mountain laurel and blueberries, Extremely low herb diversity. There is a deep organic soil horizon and worms in the soil (unusual?) Some Areas of this stand have dense moss layer and there is some flame azalea in bloom where mountain laurel is less abundant. Many clumped trees from root sprouts.
