Stand is adjacent to an ancient river levee (~10m tall) to the northwest. A few mowed pastures are interspersed within the overall fragment of relatively intact floodplain which covers about 30 hectares.;Remnant stand of red maple-black gum swamp with persistent but generally minor swamp white oak component. Stand occurs in an ancient channel of the Tygart River. Vegetated moss-covered hummocks rise about 20 cm above the flat, leaf-litter covered hollows. Deep muck soils underlie this plot. A few snags are present but not much downed wood and not much regeneration of canopy species. Second growth swamp.
