Privately owned ridge surrounded on 3 sides by the Shavers Fork River. From the road hiking in, the forest is successional tulip poplar, then mixed oak-hemlock and then oak/heath.;The plot is located on an east facing ridge. The forest is open and heavily browsed. The overstory consists of enormous red oaks. Little is any noticeable anthropologic distrubance. There are some old sawn stumps just north of the plot that perhaps demarcate the property line. Some fire scarring on old downed wood and large trees. Old fence line in edge of plot. This is a classic boundary old growth forest.
Representativeness
Small patch of red oak old growth forest. Plot was placed to sample the largest trees.
