Landscape Narrative ? Downslope are a series of haul roads and skid trails which separate logging units with various silvicultural prescriptions, (thinning and select cuts). Just below plot is a small patch of hemlock in subcanopy. Hemlock looks healthy, no sign of adelgid.;West aspect on foot hills west of Rich Mountain, near maximum precipitation station in WV. Community is a sub-xeric oak forest dominated by red and chestnut oak with black gum and red maple subordinates. Blueberry is dominant in the sparse shrub layer. Herbs are sparse. There are old rotted stumps in stand.
Representativeness ? Large (?) patch intact second growth natural forest surrounded by cutting units. Probably a matrix type on upper slopes. Sampled as example of natural composition in an industrial forest landscape. Will probably be logged before long.
