State WMA accessed here by a muddy 4-wheel drive road in the floodplain. Floodplain is dissected by braided 4-wheel routes and remaining forest is full of weeds. Matrix forests are oak - hickory with a few conifer signatures on cool aspect and in some creek bottoms (presumably hemlock).;Lower slope above floodplain of MacFarlan Creek. Slope is dissected by small drains and there are hump like toes between the drains, both provide undulation horizontally and vertically. Cool northwest aspect supports a hemlock - white oak forest with extremely sparse understory. There is one huge hemlock on a rock which is bigger than anything else, probably a remnant of presettlement forest. There are tip mounds and rotten stumps in the plot.
Representativeness
Small - medium patch hemlock forest on cool aspect. Plot placed to include giant remnant hemlock and small seepy drain (to maximize herb diversity in low diversity community). Similar to plateau hemlock at Gauley.
