Occurrence is a dry herbaceous rocky slope which terminates abruptly below (to the south) at a road and flat, populated narrow bottom. Slope comes to an angular point at the western end of its bottom where a narrow ravine cuts upwards to the NE. On the other side of the ravine is upland mixed hardwood forest. To the east end of this opening the community grades into a wooded shale barren community (see plot B- point AL0921) and the hillside extends higher.;Vegetation is not homogenous but varies as the substrate varies from bare bedrock to shallow, very stony soil. Rare Pinus, Fraxinus and Carya stunted-growth trees where there is enough accumulated soil. Sparsely vegetated. Many stunted pines are dead.
Representativeness
Plot is representative of this gap community but did not include any of the few tree species of the edges (Pinus virginiana, Fraxinus americana, Carya ovata, Quercus ilicifolia). Plot also did not include Rhus glabra which was locally present.
