Occurence is a band of dry virginia pine woodland on a steep (37degree) west-facing shale slope bordered to the north by small cliffs leading to a small-draw which contains upland mixed hardwood forest. Upslope, the top of the hill levels gradually and grades into amostly pine forest with a more even ground covering of grasses and sedges. To the south is a larger related shale barren community with greater variety of herbaceous species, less slope, and more hardwoods. Community 75 ft downslope grades rapidly to streamside vegetation and land past stream is a narrow agricultural valley flat.;There is a very even pine cover and not much herbaceous vegetation. Vegetation changes abruptly below at the creek. Just to the SE on the same slope, the cover is dominated by oak-hickory woodland with more ground vegetation.

The plot is very representative. Several endemics are present.
