Occurrence is an upland pine forest with Carya, Quercus, and Ostrya scattered throughout: Community is bounded to the north, south, and east by USFS land, while donslope (west), the area is dominated by agricultural fields in a fairly wide valley. The community upslope is described as shale barren Community 2 and forest to either side of the community change gradually into more densley vegetated deciduous forests.;Sparse vegetation distributed homogenously throughout plot. Ground vegetation tends to be concentrated in canopy gaps, but overall the canopy is quite open with small, stunted trees in the dominant layer.

Plot is representative of this community dominated by VA pine. Some additonal plants seen outside the plot include 3 Arabis serotina ( 2 bolters, 1 rosette).
