Occurrence is a pine woodland on a SW-facing slope of a large mountain. To the NE, over the summit of the slope ridge, the community changes abruptly to oak-hickory forest. This community type is also to the south, east, and directly to the west, but the transition is gradual. Further to the west, around a bowl and beginning on the next ridge, a shale barren community with Pinus pungens in the canopy and much Cladina sp. on the ground, takes over.;The plot contains two small gaps in the pine canopy but this very common in this occurrence. Ground cover is even-with some bare spots. Rosettes appearing to be Arabis sp. were located in two places near the plot-on just below the plot and the other near the top of the ridge directly upslope (north) from the plot.
