Occurrence is on the WSW-facing side of distinct ridge at the southern tip of Slaty Mountain. The shale barren continues slightly below the road to the west and then grades into stream vegetation in a very narrow valley. To the NW along the slope the aspect changes to the west in a hardwood cove and then back to the south where a slightly different shale barren community takes over. Over the ridge to the NE and down the ridge below the road to the south is upland hickory-oak forested slope.;There is a homogenous intermixing of Pinus virginiana and Quercus prinus in a somewhat stunted canopy. The ground is virtually free of herbaceous growth and has substantial litter cover, although there are areas of bare small rock piles.
Representativeness
Plot is representative of this fairly large, dry SW-facing slope of a ridge. Eriogonum alleni is present nearby to the SW on the road cut.
