Occurrence is on a WSW-facing dry shale shelf of moderate slope slanting southward down between two linear rock outcrops and undercut by a slight bend in Sleepy Creek. Across the creek is mixed deciduous cover (Platanus, Acer, Carya, Quercus) and open pasture. To the north, south, and east on the slope is a mixed woodland of Juniperus, Pinus, and Quercus.;Carex is homogenous. The other grass is patchy. The community is a small one running diagonally down a shale slope between two angled lines of rock.
