Occurrence is an open upland pine/oak forest with a sparse understory continuing to the top of the ridge and blending downslope into a narrow deciduous band of hardwoods before abruptly reaching the valley floor. The valley floor below is an open field. The community is bounded upslope by the ridge and just on the other side to the ridge lies a dam.;Forest canopy is primarily virginia pine and chestnut oak evenly distributed. There is an absence of any shrubs resulting in a very open appearance with herbs scattered evenly throughout. Grasses and sedges occur in small patches throughout plot.
Representativeness
The plot is a good representation of this very large band of shale barren community.
