Occurence is a SW facing pine forest band midslope on a hill upslope from a shallow road cut and a narrow valley with a stream leading to a large dam and reservoir 1KM downstream. Adjacent hillsides and hilltop grade gradually into dense broadleaf upland forest (with Quercus, Carya, and Pinus dominating) which is taller and has a more organic component to the soil.;Dominatnt vegetation homogenous and even. Shrub layer very sparse. Trees are evenly spaced. Herbaceous vegetation spread evenly and sparsely througout plot.
Representativeness
Antennaria cf. virginica found nearby. Plot is representative of the majority of the shale barren. There are a few small openings with more shaley soil exposed, but these are rare and not large enough to constitute a separate community. These gaps are
