Occurence is on very steep SW-facing shale slopes overlooking the South Branch Potomac Floodplain which contains agricultural fields. Occurence ends abruptly to the south at a stream at the bottom of the slope. There are some rockly cliffs and several ravines. At the top of the slope the understory becomes very thick with some overstory gaps. Then old white oak-hicklory forest takes over to the north and west. The shale barren stretches back towards the east.;These are very steep slopes and cliffs with some cascading of shale.
Representativeness
Plot is very representative although Clematis wasn't abundant elsewhere. Just next to the plot near a ravine was a fairly large population of Senecio antennariifolius and also some Solidago arguta var. harrisii.
