Shale barrens on south (SW) aspects on other side of ridge are more typical acidic barrens ("physiognomic" shale barrens, but no endemics observed) with depauperate herb layer and drought killed trees (see photos). Cooler aspects and ridge tops have nice older, slightly stunted oak forests. Nearby USFS lands are less pristine. Across river is developed farm land.;Southeast shoulder slope with small patchy shale barrens on warmest exposures. Rich type shale barren with Quercus stellata and a smidge of Juniperus virginiana and Opuntia humisfusa. Hedeoma pulgeoides is abundant in herb layer. Calcareous lens seems to be shallow - soil horizons below A quickly become acidic - but high pH is reflected in herb layer.
Representativeness
Small patches (about 1 acre), confined by soil and aspect.
