Landscape Narrative ? Occurence is on a SE-facing lower slope of Ugly Mountain. Downslope to the SE there is a road cut, a stream and an agricultural field. A dry pine woodland with much pine litter and lichens dominates the top of the ridge to the NW. Otherwise there is mixed pine-hardwood forest over most of this part of the mountain and across the field.;There are a few large gaps in the pine canopy with downed trees and heavy Carex cover on the ground. Otherwise there is even pine cover with mixed oak-ash-hicklory understory. Eriogonum is very abundant with Antennaria plantaginifolia and Lespedeza procumbens becoming dominant with several exotics (thistle, Verbascum) as the aspect changes to the east on the knoll.
Representativeness ? The plot is representative in that it is part gap, part canopy. Several shale barren near-endemics are present (Eriogonum) or neaby (Clematis albicoma, Allium cernuum, and Calystegia spithomea ssp. purshiana).
