Occurence is on a SE-facing lower slope of Ugly Mountain. Downslope to the SE there is a road cut, a stream and an agricultural field. A dry pine woodland with much pine litter and lichens dominates the top of the ridge to the NW. Otherwise there is mixed pine-hardwood forest over most of this part of the mountain and across the field.;There are a few large gaps in the pine canopy with downed trees and heavy Carex cover on the ground. Otherwise there is even pine cover with mixed oak-ash-hicklory understory. Eriogonum is very abundant with Antennaria plantaginifolia and Lespedeza procumbens becoming dominant with several exotics (thistle, Verbascum) as the aspect changes to the east on the knoll.
Representativeness
The plot is representative in that it is part gap, part canopy. Several shale barren near-endemics are present (Eriogonum) or neaby (Clematis albicoma, Allium cernuum, and Calystegia spithomea ssp. purshiana).
