This stand is in the most disturbed area of the WMA with a road nearby and the highest density of game plots. There are some fairly young forests nearby, but is buffered to the east by a large tract of older forests.;Like many other of these stands, this one may have resulted from a hot fire last century where P. rigida replaced almost everything and an open canopy allowed for dense ericad regeneration. Mixed oaks of Quercus prinus, Q. velutina, and occasional Q. coccinea are the succeeding sub-canopy. Shrub layer appears browsed and there almost no herbs.
Representativeness
Represents a successional (unless burned) Pinus rigida forest with mixed oak and Nyssa understory and dense Kalmia understory. Stand is fairly uniform and well represented here except that in some places Kalmia is impenetrable.
