Steep slope at end of ridge systems with boulder communities.;Open forest or woodland of large Pinus pungens on rocky slope above an open boulderfield and bedrock substrate. Large open shrub layer with patches of drawf shrubs. Fire scars onpole sized snags and large pines. Mesic trees such as Pinus strobus and Betula coming in. Several Pinus pungens cored were over 250 years old.

1 hectare, medium sized patch of Pinus pungens dominance with shrub sized deciduous subcanopy mixed with Kalmia latifolia. Old growth stand.
