Across creek is prominent cliff band (Devils Nose). Creek bottom has small floodplain and scoured area. Rhododendron maxmum becomes abundant under Tsuga downslope. Matrix forests are deciduous Oak.;Steep NW slope above high gradient stream with sandstone outcropping ledges, bedrock and boulders. Forest dominated by Tsuga canadensis, still mostly alive, but with Hemlock adelgid present and many trees stressed. Shrub layer is sparse with some Kalmia latifolia. Leucobryum glaucum (moss) is indicative of dry, sterile site conditions.
Representativeness
Representative of Hemlock stand on rocky side slopes with clear dominance by Tsuga with mixture of Quercus prinus. Rhododendron becomes more abundant below plot. Rare type in deciduous matrix.
