The plot is located ca. 30m from a narrow dry ridge covered with a similar community. Over the ridge is a steeo gorge slope above the Cheat River. Across river is Coopers Rock. The south facing slopes of the WMA are made up of this xeric oak, community repeats on drier positions with sub-xeric oak (Quercus rubra / Acer rubrum / Smilax rotundifolia) and a few successional tulip poplar. The most interesting stuff here is most likely on the steep northern gorge slopes on limestone. However, we didn't get a chance to look at it . It is most likely similar to Pringle Gorge slopes.;Dry oak - heath forest dominated by Quercus spp. (scarlet, white, rock) over a dense patch of Kalmia latifolia. Depauperate herb layer. Several old sawn stumps found throughout the plot. Some fire scarring is found on some of the older stumps. There is a jeep trail down slope from the plot which doesn't appear on the quad.
Representativeness
Small patch xeric - oak - health forest. Very similar to the small patch which occurs along the road at the Briery Mountain WMA, Preston County. Area was surveyed to find similar communities to that of Briery Mountain, hopefully in better condition. They
