Landscape Narrative ? Steep gradient river through industrial coal/timber lands and small holdings with trailers. Downstream are known occurrences of Virginia Spiraea and Barbara's buttons, which we are searching for here.;Frequently flooded boulder bar along class 3-4 rapids reach of river. Community is on flood battered head of island. Lower positions in plot were flooded recently with fresh wet silt on cobble and basal stems. Community is a sunny shrub-prairie dominated by big blue stem over shorter shrubs (blackgum, white azalea, alder) with a ring of 2m tall sycamore on river's edge. Abundance of white-topped aster mimics Rand's goldenrod found in similar habitat elsewhere.
Representativeness ? Almost entire patch of riverscour prairie with no canopy cover in the tree classes. Represented in small patches along high gradient reach from Ten Mile downstream to Sago. Similar to Gauley but lower diversity.
