Landscape Narrative |
In front of rock house is hemlock - yellow birch / rhododendron in rocky bowl. Blue-blaze property line runs down bowl. Red oak and hemlock overhang cliff top. Riparian zone of Buckhannon River is similar to Arden, Gauley.;Sandstone bedrock undercut by a stream that has carved a dramatic rock house. A stream still runs at the base of the overhang and there are small seeps, but most of rock face is dry, never exposed to liquid water. Humid conditions are aintained by stream, overhang, and topographic position. Community is dominated by dust lichens and bryophytes with a couple herbs. Heuchera parvifolia is on dryer rocks towards river and across drain. Plant fossils in sandstone boulders on floor. Cliff is about 10 m tall.
|
Representativeness |
Plot runs from base of bedrock cliff to top of cliff, does not include exfoliated boulders under cliff. Cliff band extends another 10-20 m each side of plot, and similar cliffs are repeated on opposite aspect across drainage.
