See plot USFS.347. The site is located about 150 m from the ridgetop. Outside the plot is a somewhat undisturbed oak forest. TNC3 passed through 2 major community types. The pine dominated, drier steeper, well drained slopes. The hardwoods prevailed on the gentler moister slopes.;The site represents a Quercus prinus - Pinus virginiana woodland on a moderately steep sideslope. Vaccinium pallidum and V.stamineum dominate the shrub layer. This site looks like it is being threatened by Gypsy moths. A 15 cm dbh Quercus prinus was cores and was approx. 50 years in age. The trees here are only about 5 m tall. The community appears intact. No visible signs of anthropogenic disturbance.
Representativeness
The USFS plots were placed at random points along a transect. This transect was placed to sample the mixed oak pine forest and the more open sandstone glade communities found on North Fork Mountain. This plot was located in a oak pine woodland.
