West of the plot on the crest of the ridge is a thin band of Virginia pine growing along the cliff edge. The surrounding forest is a somewhat pristine oak dominated hardwood forest.;Pinus virginiana - Quercus rubra woodland on sandstone bedrock. The trees here are relatively short. The plot was located on the crest of a narrow ridge. No shrub species present. Vegetation is homogeneous. Large openings in canopy allowing for a great number of grasses in the herb layer, mostly Luzula multiflora. The soils are very shallow. Mostly organic matter (needles and twigs). Virginia pine was cored; 18 cm dbh, approx. 40 years old.
