Trail below plot meanders through old growth patch. State park has picnic areas, openings, old strip mines but is more intact than surrounding private lands.;Ravine in a dissected plateau with a small patch of original forest (see J. Rentch dissertation). Stand is a multi-aged forest dominated by red and white oak with shagbark hickory subordinate subcanopy and shrub layers are dominated by shade tolerant tree saplings. High diversity in herb layer, which is invaded by garlic mustard.

Dry-mesic oak forest. Placed plot to include big trees, snag and canopy gap and maintain uniform aspect.
