Forest over limestone, dry-mesic with Quercus alba dominant with Fraxinus americana and Carya ovata. Herb layer is tall, rich with Hybanthus concolor. Scattered grasses occur (Bromus, Elymus hystrix). Aspect is of a forest but patches of light dapple the ground surface. Bedrock exposures and boulders are numerous. Plot is on a long tongue of limestone which runs more or less N-S. This community grades down into a somewhat more-sheltered white oak forest. Other prominent tall herbs include Verbesina occidentalis, Monarda fistulosa. This is a karstic landscape and caves occur in the vicinity. The limestone rocks at the surface are covered with Thuidium, Sedum ternatum, Pellaea atropurpurea, and Asplenium resiliens.
