Floodplain swamp of the Okawaha River. South of site Pinus elliottii dominated scrub occurs (Lake George Wilderness Area). Overstory consists of Taxodium distichum (60-80 feet tall), Nyssa biflora (up to 50 feet tall), and Fraxinus pennsylvanica (up to 60 feet tall). Subcanopy consists of Acer rubrum, Sabal palmetto, Fraxinus pennsylvanica, and Fraxinus caroliniana ( all 30 feet or less). The same suite of species comprise the shrub layer. Ground cover very sparse with Rhynchospora corniculata, Peltandra virginica, tall Panicum gymnocarpum. Open water at about 2 feet deep encompasses ground. Numerous downed logs fill the area - some are nursery logs. Several large-diameter cypress stumps were observed. Pileated woodpecker was visiting site at the time of our survey. Many tall cypress knees present (up to 4 feet tall).
