Observation Narrative
Carex riishirensis= in original Carex montanensis. Carex podocarpa=In original Carex montanensis. The birch-heath-lichens type on shallower soils occurs throughout the region on gravelly and rocky slopes and terraces at lower elevations where the soil is well-drained and dries out rather rapidly after rains. These sites become free of snow early in the season and are probably bare during part of the winter also. These stands are less dense and bare ground occupying one-sixteenth of six plots with 3 times less moss cover and one-quarter less lichen cover than the stands on deeper soil. Microstands of this type are found on hummocks and mounds in other communities, for example in the cottongrass-sedge-dwarf heath shrub complex and sedge marshes. Entered by L. Druckenmiller and imported into TV by A. Breen and L. Druckenmiller
