Landscape Narrative ? This is an open woodland dominated by Quercus prinus. There is much fire evidence including burned stump holes. Most open areas contain Schizachyrium scoparium, Andropogon gerardii, and Carex pensylvanica. Shadier areas contain more Carex pensylvanica. Forbs are diverse with many Asteraceae. Ostrya is frequent in the understory. The soils are apparently deeper than the other plot at this site (CHER.31). The shale at the surface is not evident except for small fragments. The site is steep. Fire would easily carry up hill and the site is south-facing where a combination of steepness, insolation and fire combine to keep the site open. Pines (Pinus virginiana) are dead or show signs of stress as do some Quercus prinus. The aspect is very open. Some areas below have Quercus muehlenbergii and Thaspium pinnatifidum., this perhaps over a vein of limestone.
