Steep southeast facing midslopes with maturing forest dominated by oaks, red maple and hickories. Gaps in canopy with establishment of tree of heavan, reasons for gaps unknown. -- Adjacent communities on lower. more moderate slopes with less southerly aspects are dominated by tulip poplar, more severe sites (south and southwest) aspects have dry oak/ericoid communities. Community distribution may also be controlled by geology and disturbance history.
