Steep north facing mid-slopes with mixed evergreen/deciduous forest dominated by hemlock, chestnut oak, and sweet birch, with maple-leafed viburnum and marginal shield fern as typical shrub and fern indicators of relatively cool moist conditions. Hemlock appears to be dying off due to comptition (?) or wooly adelgid (?). -- Small patches of hemlock dominance embedded in similar matrix community of north face lacking hemlock. Hypothosized from winter infra-red photo red signiture that hemlock is more dominant in draws.
