Park along 441 and hike up to western ridge off Balsam Point. Follow ridge until red oak turns into Rhodo and Kalmia. Follow draw down into cove. This hemlock forest is surrounded by cliffs!! The draw from the top is the easiest (maybe only) way in.
Only A soil sample collected..unsure if mineral soil. The cove is covered with large house and car sized boulders. -- Surrounded by cliffs containing rhododendron and red oak.

At first impression this appears to be a Hemlock stand, but on closer inspection deciduous trees (mostly y.birch) appear to comprise about 25% of canopy. Many understory hemlock, poorly developed herb stratum. Very bouldery site...almost a boulderfield.
