Flat ridgetop with more mesic forest (evidenced by presence of sweet birch and low cover by chestnut oak) than on steep sideslopes of ridge. Community with canopy dominated by red oak, hickory, and sassafras. Shrub and herbaceous layers are relatively light. -- Adjacent communities on side slopes are chestnut oak/ericoid shrub communities. This community has some affinity with north slopes of Loudoun Heights across Potomac River and also with oak-hickory communities in areas of intermediate hydrologic regime on Maryland Heights.
