Shenandoah River floodplain on east side of river upstream from Rt. 340 bridge and across side channel from large island. Access from Blue Ridge Acres subdivision (follow signs to "no river access")
Floodplain forest dominated by large oaks of 3 spp. with dense shrub understory. Plot is out of slough but on lower terrace subject to intermittant flooding. Oak dominance may be indication of community maturity since edaphic differences from sycamore community are not apparent. Oak dominance may also be due to calcareous alluvium since plot is downstream from the "Great Limestone Valley." -- Similar community with Shumard oak (pin oak?) was sampled across Shenandoah River (plot 21), but this species was not seen along Potomac River.
