Shrubs Cephalanthus occidentalis and Rubus discolor and herbs line the edges of the island while the center of the island lacks an understory layer due to human disturbance (trampling). A similar island to the south has a more prolific Rubus discolor understory throughout the whole stand at 50% cover (possibly because of its inaccessibility).
