Layout Narrative
Transect endpoints are permanently marked with rebar. Distance and compass bearing measurements to the plot location with measurements of plot orientation off the transect were taken. GPS coordinates for each corner of the plot was taken with submeter accuracy.; 0-38m 320 degrees NNW. Plot on NE side of transect at 12m from 0. Community Type = Linear; Confidence that full extent of occurrence is known = excellent.

Observation Narrative
Community Type: Pine Barrens savanna
General Community Description: Pitch pine-oak forest. Uplands dissected by major river drainages. River narrows with meandering floodplains. Typical floodplain development - levee, backwater , floodplain and seepage channels. Narrow bands of cedar swamp at ecotone with forest grading into broad savanna, bordered by cedar at levee by river.; Community Description: Open herbaceous-graminoid-sphagnum savanna with patches of heavily browsed dwarf cedar. Most abundant species include Narthecium americanum, Eriocaulon decangulare, Rhynchospora alba, R. oligantha, dwarf Chamaecyparis thyoides, Sphagnum pulchrum. Islands of Chamaecyparis and Pinus tall shrubs and small trees scattered throughout making it look very much like a 'savanna'. Grades into cedar swamp on W, N and E sides (burned on N) and backwater 'ponded area' to south.; Evidence of Community Processes: browsing by deer, saturated peat, fire history (1980?), deer trails.; Species Composition and Biological Structure: "Narthecium savanna by nature is somewhat patchy - Narthecium clumps on flats and scattered dwarf cedar islands. Amidst a sea of Sphagnum and Rhychospora. High diversity."; Other associated species present but not in plot: Tofieldia racemosa, Lycopodium carolinianum, Sphagnum pylaesii, Juncus caesariensis, Sphagnum cyclophyllum (observed Jan. 3, 2002). Damselfly (bright blue with blue abdomen), praying mantis and ant are present.
