Observation Narrative ? Community Type: Pine Barrens savanna Community Description: Broad sedge savannah with scattered live stunted pines (2-5m), dwarf cedar, and standing dead snags from 1980s fire (cedar mainly along edges). Mosaic of sedge, shrubby and Narthecium types.; Ecological Processes: History of fire. Groundwater seepage voluminous. Fire burned cedar near creek too.; Abiotic factors: deep peat over sand.; Local Topography: Broad, flat, tussocky savanna between cedar swamp and river.; Within monitoring plot: dense sedge mat - low tussocks and a few taller hummocks with cedar and Myrica, scattered, stunted Pinus rigida in sedges, clusters of shrubby areas with dwafr cedar, Ilex and Andropogon glomeratus (Andropogon scattered throughout), burned standing snags appear to be mostly cedars with only occasisional burned pines, cedar is regenerating particularly in shrub savanna; Schizaea pusilla is tucked in with Rhynchospora which is unusual; Other associated species present but not in plot: Sphagnum magellanicum, Sphagnum fuscum.
