Observation Narrative |
Community Type: non-tidal floodplain forest
General Description: Floodplain forest located on the S side of the Cohansey River to the south and mesic to upland beech-oak woods to the north. Woods are on a fairly steep incline. Channel is braided and floodplain forest is broken by numerous smaller streams, channels and mucky swampy areas.
Community Description: Acer rubrum and Fraximus americana dominated floodplain forest located on Alloway Creek. Floodplain is a mosaic of small islands surrounded by the much-braided creek. Beyond the floodplain, the land rises rather steeply to a mesic Fagus grandifolia forest, then grades further into an upland Fagus-Quercus-Carya forest. There is no obvious human disturbance to the floodplain. Evidence of flooding includes severe scouring (tree roots deeply exposed, toppled trees), some soil deposit and piles of flood debris. The extent of the deposition is difficult to estimate because of dense vegetation cover. The main streambed is variously yellow to gray clay and somewhat firm. Back channels and swamps are mostly black muck. Floodplain is generally less than 1 meter above the level of the stream at this time. Community has no discernable slope and faces SW-S-SE depending on position of the winding stream. Soil is generally clay loam over clay and poorly drained. Microstegium vimineum is a problem.; Evidence of Community Processes: scouring, silt and flood debris deposits, deeply exposed roots, toppled trees, debris and soil deposits.; Physiographic Province = Inner Coastal Plain; Damselflies, pickerel frog, star-nosed mole present.; Plot Note: Toxicodendron radicans is found climbing almost every tree in the plot. Often it is difficult to see the tree leaves because of the spreading branches of this vine. All tree diamter measurements (on large trees) are increased because of thick vines (up to 4") clinging to trunks. Much of the sub-canopy is made up of this species.
