Community Type: non-tidal floodplain forest
General Description: Floodplain forest located on a terrace about 4-5' above the level of Assunpink Creek. Forest canopy is dominated by +/- 90% Acer rubrum. There is very little sub-canopy. Shrub layer in all strata is mostly Lindera benzoin. Forbs are almost all ferns. Dennstaedtia punctilobula with occassional Osmunda cinnamomea. Occasional dense patches of Microstegium vimineum are located mostly where an opening in the canopy is found. Thick leaf litter is found throughout in unvegetated spots. Floodplain forest grades into a fairly dry swampy area adjacent to the road. Dominant tree species is Acer rubrum.; Community Description: Forest community with tree layer dominated by Acer rubrum, shrub layer by Lindera benzoin, and vine layer by Smilax rotundifolia. Low diversity in all vegetation layers. Floodplain is high and dry with significant litter and duff.; Evidence of Community Processes: No evidence of flooding. A few trees broken midway up are present.; Physiographic Province = Inner Coastal Plain.
