Layout Narrative |
Transect endpoints are permanently marked with rebar. Distance and compass bearing measurements to the plot location with measurements of plot orientation off the transect were taken. GPS coordinates for each corner of the plot was taken with submeter accuracy. Plot is 10x40m.
Stand Size: "There is much more potential habitat to search."

Landscape Narrative |
General Landscape Description: Floodplain forest occupying the S end of Bulls Island. Floodplain is cut by at least 2 channels (old stream beds?) running more or less parallel to the shore. A lower (2m) sandy terrace and rocky beach adjoin the floodplain forest to the W, along the river.;
Soil Texture: Organic - peat; Mineral - sand, sandy loam, silt loam, silt
Von Post scale of peat decomposition: H8;
Organic Horizon Type: Mull;
Soil Moisture (saturation depth): >1m;
Environmental Comments: recent severe flooding, deep sand deposits.

Observation Narrative |
General Description: Floodplain forest on a terrace about two meters above DE River. Dominant trees are large (Acer saccharinum and Platanus occidentalis, with some Acer negundo, Liriodendron tulipfera, Tilia americana). Understory shrub layer is dominated by Lindera benzoin. Matteuccia struthiopteris is abundant on the forest floor. Other forest floor species include Equisetum hyemale, Arisaema triphyllum, and Urtica sp. There are patches of Microstegium vimineum and Polygonum cespitosum. Area has been flooded within the past year - a layer of water-borne sand and silt is evident in many places, and flood debris is equally visible. Although this is public land, there is little sign of human activity, other than a narrow foot trail from a parking area to the river.; Evidence of Community Processes: Sand deposits, downed trees, flood debris, water formed depressions around base of trees; Community Description: Old growth Acer saccharinum and Platanus occidentalis dominated floodplain facing SW on an island in the DE River. Community has (at least) two channels or old streambeds running more or less parallel to the shore of the river in the S end of the island. Recent severe flooding has deposited up to 20" of sand on top of the terrace nearest the river (where plot is located). Behind this berm, the sand deposition is spotty, and are mixed among areas that have been severely scoured. Piles of debris and toppled trees are frequent. The toppled trees have created some openings in the canopy. Tree strata is comprised of mostly Acer saccharinum and Platanus occidentalis near the river and further landward we found significant amounts of Liriodendron tulipifera. Understory trees are mostly Acer negundo or Ulmus americana. Shrub layer is mostly Lindera benzoin. Forb layer at this time is patchy - dense along the riveredge and uphill slope, but nearly bare areas are found where the samd deposition has occurred. There is no evident man-made disturbance. Soil is sand for about 50cm, beneath is a layer several cm wide of organic material; below is a lighter silt or silt loam to 100cm.
