Landscape Narrative ? General Landscape Description: Floodplain forest on a low terrace on the E bank of Cakepoulin Creek in Capooling Creek WMA. Floodplain ranges from 100-200' wide in the vicinity of the survey. Beyond it, heading E, it grades abruptly into a Syplocarpus-dominated backswamp. Land rises sharply for several feet to a railroad grade beyond the backswamp. Both communities are dominated by Acer rubrum at this location, but at other sites along the stream significant numbers of Juglans nigra, Platanus occidentalis, and Fraxinus americana are found. Floodplain is overrun by invasive plant species.; Soil Texture: Organic - peat; Mineral - sandy loam Von Post Scale of Peat Decomposition: H8; Organic Horizon Type: Mor; Soil Moisture (saturation depth): 75cm; Physiographic Province: Piedmont.

Observation Narrative ? Community Type: non-tidal floodplain forest General Description: Acer rubrum dominated floodplain forest on a low terrace on the E bank of Cakepoulin Creek. Floodplain is overrun by Rosa multiflora and the herbaceous layer is dominated by Microstegium vimineum. Vitis sp. Covers many of the shrubs and is in the tree canopy. Floodplain is about 100-120' wide; it then grades into a mucky skunk cabbage backswamp before the land rises to a railroad grade. There is little or no recent disturbance. Much of the riverbank is lined with large Platanus occidentalis, several of which have toppled and lie across the rocky-bottomed, north-flowing stream. There is no sign of any recent flooding, although there is some undercutting of banks and mud covered vegetation on the slopes angling down to the stream. Soil is brown sandy loam 10 YR 3/6 with mottles appearing at about 68cm.; Evidence of Community Processes: None on floodplain, erosion to stream banks has caused several very large Platanus occidentalis to topple, some are still alive but horizontal across stream.; Threats to EO: Floodplain is already degraded by rampant invasive species. The worst-case scenario is that Rosa multiflora will completely cover both communities (doubtful unless backswamp dries up) and Vitis sp. Will completely fill the canopy and begin to kill the trees.; Wood thrush, turkey and ruffed grouse present.; Community Description: Densely vegetated floodplain forest located between Cakepoulin Creek to the W and a wide backswamp on the E. Floodplain lies +/- 4-5' above the level of the stream. At the edge is a very low natural levee which is covered by a dense thicket of Rosa multiflora. There is no evidence of flooding, but mud-covered leaves and stems of the vegetation on the slope (from the levee to the stream) indicate that the stream has run considerably higher recently. Some scouring and erosion of banks has cause several large trees growing on the edge to topple. Trees in the survey vicinity are all Acer rubrum but there are significant numbers of Juglans nigra, Fraxinus americana, and Platanus occidentalis nearby, as well as several other tree species. Shrub layer is dominated by Lindera benzoin and Rosa multiflora. Herbaceous layer has a high percentage of Microstegium vimineum where conditions are favorable. No evident recent disturbance; soil is brown sandy loam, 10 YR 3/6 grading to 5 YR 3/4 in color. Mottling appears at 68cm.
