Observation Narrative |
Community Type: non-tidal floodplain forest
General Description: Floodplain forest on the S bank of Devil's Brook, separated from brook by a low levee or spoil bank, and grading gradually into mesic woods. Parts of the site are wet backswamp or old stream channels. Dominant trees are Acer rubrum, Nyssa sylvatica and Liquidambar styraciflua with some Betula nigra. Shrub layer is dense and dominated by Clethra alnifolia. Ground cover is mostly Lycopodium obscurum, Maianthemum canadense, and Woodwardia areolata. This is a small forest remnant, more or less between 2 housing developments; but there is no obvious recent human disturbance, i.e., no serious litter, dumping or cutting. There is some, but not much, flood debris in low spots. Soils are peat and muck at surface, underlain by sand. The water table is at 44cm, in the test plot. Slope down to stream is 90% Microstegium vimineum, otherwise, there are very few invasives.; Black-billed cuckoo, ovenbird, ebony jewelwing, mosquitos, small fish present.; Community Description: Densely vegetated flat floodplain on the S bank of Devil's Brook, behind a levee about 3' high. Levee appears to be a spoil pile and stream looks like a drainage canal. Floodplain is dominated by Acer rubrum amd Nyssa sylvatica with smaller amounts of Liquidambar and Betula lenta. Most trees are well-developed (50-100 years) but not ancient. E of the plot, the forest becomes swampy and is vegetated by numerous hydric species. The forest has a thick layer of shrubs, mostly Clethra alnifolia, but with significant amounts of Vaccinium corymbosum. The subshrub Rubus hispidus covers large araes, as fo ferns and fern allies. Forbs are thin. The only evidence of flooding is at the base of the levee (the outer side) where there are few piles of flood debris. The levee itself is covered by a dense growth of Microstegium vimineum, which extends to the stream edge. Soil is very acid and has a thick (13 cm) layer of leaves and peat, then muck. All sand layer is reached at ~ 44cm as is the water table. More woods to the S are adjacent to the lawns of new homes and are disturbed by clearing, raking and other activities. Except for the lush Microstegium at the stream edge, the forest is relatively clear of invasive species. Stream is sufficiently shallow and slow-moving to have beds of Polygonum sp. And Nuphar advena growing in it.
