Observation Narrative |
Community Type: non-tidal floodplain forest
General Description: Floodplain forest on a terrace about 0.5 meters above marsh. Terrain is somewhat undulating, but in general, there is a gradual rise away from the stream, to a rather level mesic forest. Dominant trees on floodplain include Nyssa sylvatica, Fagus grandifolia, Liquiambar styraciflua, and several species of Quercus. Shrubs include Vaccinium corymbosum, Eubotrys racemosa, and Clethra alnifolia. Forbs are scarce. There is considerable deer browsing, mostly on Clethra. Human disturbance is negligible. There are no invasive species. There is no sign of recent flooding. Soils are 10 YR /3/3 loam to 21 cm depth. 2.5 Y/5/4 clay to 50 cm and 7.5 YR /5/4 clay and small pebbles to 90 cm or more.; Evidence of Community Processes: Flared tree bases near marsh; some exposed roots; much standing dead wood, mostly mature white oaks.; Box turtle present.; Community Description: Floodplain forest on a gradual slope, bordered by a freshwater tidal marsh to the north and a more upland mesic woods to the S. Community appears to be in transition from an oak forest to a mixed-hardwood forest with a developing canopy of beech and gum beneath the remaining emergent oaks. There is no evidence of flooding, erosion or human disturbance (except for one deer stand). Water table is below 90 cm depth. Soil has an organic layer about 7 cm thick, below which is very dark brown (10 YR 3/3) loam to 21 cm. Beneath are layers of sandy clay with pebbles 2.5 Y/5/4 and 7.5 YR /5/4, with gray marbling but no mottles.
