Landscape Narrative |
General Landscape Description: Floodplain forest on a low terrace between Mantua Creek to the NW and Porch Branch to the NE. Creek edge is slightly elevated and in most places colonized by very large, mature trees. Behind is an extensive swamp mostly vegetated by Symplocarpus and Impatiens, but is just muddy at this time. To the S, the land rises and the community becomes mesic rather than hydric.;

Observation Narrative |
Community Type: non-tidal floodplain forest
General Description: Floodplain forest near the confluence of Mantua Creek and the Porch Branch. Normally, very wet. Area is bounded by well-defined mesic slopes. Dominant trees are Acer rubrum, Ulmus americana, Fraxinus spp., Platanus occidentalis. Shrub layer is mostly Lindera benzoin. Dominant forb by far is Symplocarpus foetidus. There is abundant sign of more or less recent flooding: silt deposits, scouring and flood debris. Site is a small forest remnant surrounded by development, but there is little sign of human disturbance. Plot was about 1 meter above stream surface at time of visit. Soils are dark brown silt loams. No water was encountered in a boring to 88cm depth. Mantua Creek at this point is about 3 meters wide, clear, fast-moving, with fish and freshwater mussels.; Evidence of Community Processes: Much silt and flood debris deposits scouring on streambank and on low terrace.; General Comments: Site is dry (i.e., just muddy) at this time - is primarily vegetated by hydric species. With normal rainfall, this would be extremely wet.; Community Description: Floodplain forest on a low (~1 m) terrace above Mantua Creek to the NW and mesic woods to the S. A low natural levee has formed at the stream edge and very large old trees are found there (Platanus, Liriodendron, Acer). Floodplain beyond levee is slightly lower and is dominated by hydric species, especially Symplocarpus foetidus. There are large piles of flood debris (sticks and leaves) as well as fallen or broken trees and silt deposits evident. Floodplain is dry (i.e., muddy) at this time. Behind levee, dominant trees are Fraxinus (pensylvanica, americana), Acer rubrum and Ulmus americana. A narrow drainage ditch passes through the floodplain to the S. Soils are brown and gray-brown silt loams with mottles just below (~10 cm) the surface. Soil is saturated at about 75 cm. No disturbance is evident at this time, although in the past, the upper part of the floodplain was probably filled when MUA building was put in. Stream has native and non-native mollusks growing in it.; Mollusks, fish, damselflies, green frog present.
