Observation Narrative |
Community Type: non-tidal floodplain forest
General Description: Floodplain forest set back from the stream for a distance of 50-100' depending on location. To the S is a grassy floodplain and beyond that, the Metedeconk River. Forest to the N slopes gently downhill through a transitional zone which borders an upland forest. Forest appears to be undergoing succession from swamp to forest. Many rotted tree bases, fallen trees and hummocks are throughout. Much of the area is dotted with Carex stricta tussocks, otherwise the forest floor is covered with Microstegium. Trees are mostly Acer rubrum of all sizes. Some quite large, with occassional Liquidambar styraciflua. There is almost no shrub layer except in transitional zone and very few forbs. Trees are on hummocks with wide-spreading exposed roots. Shrubs are almost all growing with trees on hummocks (in vicinity of the plot).; Evidence of Community Processes: Flooding on stream banks, scouring.; General Comments: This area was probably a swamp at one time, trees on hummocks, many exposed roots, hydric vegetation in patches, clumps of Carex stricta. There are several different community types along this bank of the creek. There was no "typical" site to sample.; Community Description: Acer rubrum dominated floodplain forest situated between an open, grassy floodplain community adjacent to the Metedeconk River (to the S) and a mesic forest slightly uphill to the N. At the base of the slope is a narrow muddy depression filled with hydric species. There is no evidence of recent flooding, except along banks, but vegetation and soils suggest that this area was flooded for a prolonged period at one time. Large sedge tussocks are found throughout, as well as the decaying stumps of long ago fallen trees. The shrub layer is scanty and consists mostly of Vaccinium corymbosum. Short shrubs are severely deer-browsed. Only a few leafy forbs are present in trace amounts. Most of the plot is overrun by a luxuriant growth of tall Microstegium vimineum. Soil is lightweight, loose, crumbly, black organic matter to a depth of 23 cm, then black muck underneath. No evidence of human disturbance.; Black rattlesnake, squirrel, chipmunk, chiggers present.
