Observation Narrative |
Community Type: non-tidal floodplain forest
General Description: Floodplain forest lying about 2 m above the level of the adjacent Millstone River to the W. To the E is a raised dike and beyond that is the D&R Canal. Forest is dominated by Acer saccharinum with some Acer negundo as a subcanopy species. There are mixed hardwoods throughout, including Juglans, Nyssa, Acer rubrum, Carya spp. and Fraxinus spp. The shrub layer is almost all Lindera benzoin with some patches of Rosa multiflora. A lush growth of graminoids and a lesser number of forbs carpet the interior between the two streams, esp. Carex grantii and Elymus.; Evidence of Community Processes: flood debris, some scouring.; Red-billed woodpecker, woodthrush, red-eyed vireo, chimney swifts present.; Community Description: Floodplain forest located between the Millstone River to the W and the D&R Canal on the E. It is densely vegetated but has fairly low diversity. Natural levee along river is vegetated by a carpet of Microstegium vimineum. Beyond the levee, vegetation is a mixture of graminoids, a few forbs, and the dominant shrub Linder benzoin. Acer saccharinum is the dominant canopy tree, with Acer negundo dominating the sub-canopy. A variety of other tree species are scattered throughout the community. Piles of flood debris are found near the edge as well as well inland. Some erosion is evident near the bank, as bulblets of Ranunculus ficaria are exposed. Soil is well-compacted, dry, silt loam, dark red brown in color. Plot sits about 2 m above the level of the broad, slow-moving Millstone R. No disturbance except for a narrow, seldom used fishermen's path.
