Landscape Narrative ? General Landscape Description: Low floodplain forest located W of the Rahway River and N of Nomahegan Brook. Floodplain continues to the N and W for well over 1000'. Community is bone dry at the time of the survey but shows evidence of frequent flooding. In the vicinity of the Rahway River, floodplain becomes more hydric and is actually muddy in a few spots. Dominant tree species are Fraxinus americana, Acer rubrum and Quercus palustris, with Ulmus americana found frequently as an understory tree. Floodplain is marked by frequent shallow depressions and occasional man-made ditches. Species diversity is low.; Soils: bone dry at surface - top more or less 40 cm was like fine dust. Mottling difficult to identify because colors blended together when handled. Soil Texture: Organic - peat; Mineral - clay loam Physiographic Province: Piedmont; Environmental Comments: Frequent depressions and runoff channels

Observation Narrative ? Community Type: non-tidal floodplain forest General Description: Floodplain forest characterized by dominant tree sepcies Acer rubrum, Fraxinus americana, Quercus palustris with frequent Ulmus americana, located on a low terrace on the N bank of Nomahegan Brook near its intersection with the Rahway River. Floodplain is crossed by some man-made ditches and natural runoff channels with associated depressions. Abundance evidence of flooding is seen (piles of debris and trash) but at this time, it is very dry and the herbaceous species are dying. Community has almost no shrubs nor tree seedlings. Dominant herbs are sedges (Carex spp.), grasses (Leersia virginica, Cinna arundinacea, Microstegium vimineum) and mixed Polygonums (caespitosum, cuspidatum, punctatum, hydropiperoides, arifolium). Toxicodendron radicans is found throughout the tree canopy and has probably caused the lower tree branches to die. No recent disturbance except for some cutting of Polygonum cuspidatum.; Evidence of Community Processes: exposed roots, scouring, piles of sticks and trash.; Community Description: Low diversity floodplain forest on the N bank of the Nomahegan Brook just W of its intersection with the Rahway River. At the time of the survey, floodplain was so dry that there were cracks in the ground and the non-graminoid forbs were wilting. Few woody species are found except for trees. Dominant species are Faxinum americana, Acer rubrum and Quercus palustris, with frequent Ulmus americana. Shrubs are rare. Dominant herbaceous species are mixed Carices, grasses Cinna arundinacea, Leersia virginica and Microstegium vimineum and Phalaris arundinacea in sunnier, wetter spots. Otherwise, Polygonum (caespitosum, punctatum, hydropiperoides, cuspidatum and arifolium) make up the bulk of the herbaceous vegetation. P. cuspidatum forms a wide barrier on both sides of the Rahway R., and is beginning to grow on the N bank of Nomahegan Brook. Its growth is stunted from the drought. Large piles of flood debris mixed with some trash are found throughout, especially in low depressions and natural or man-made drainage channels. Trees tend to grow on slightly higher ground. Banks of the stream are undercut in spots. No evidence of recent disturbance, except for some cutting of P. cuspidatum on the Rahway R. Floodplain has frequent drainage channels and depressions which are filled with more hydric species.
